New Grace

Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God (Romans 5:1-2).

I became acquainted with the song New Grace in the mid 1980s at Calvary Baptist Church, Kingston, Tennessee.  The song was offered often by Stacey Bearden.  I was also fortunate to head it sang by its author, Evangelist Dr. Tom Hayes, about the same time.  I have since heard Dr. Hayes sing it in person several times and it’s always a blessing.

How marvelous is God’s saving grace.  For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast (Eph 2:8-9).  Is it not overwhelming to know that we can do nothing in our own works or power to be saved; that we can only be saved through the grace of God which was made possible by the death and resurrection of God’s only begotten son, Christ.  I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me (Gal 2:20-21).

God provides living grace to His children.  Titus 2:11-12 tells us For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world.  Though we are greatly tested in this life, his grace is sufficient to see us through.  And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me (2 Cor 12:9).  There is going to come a time that we cannot make it in our own determination and weakness if we trust the Lord to see us through.  Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need (Heb 4:16).

Not only does God provide saving grace and living grace but he supplies loving grace.  2 Cor 8:7 gives us instruction: Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also.  Further, 1 John 4:10-11 says Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.  For the love of others, we labor by the grace of God.  The Apostle Paul said in 1 Cor 15:9-10 said For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.

There is a grace we will need, after living and loving others, that we have not personally experienced yet.  One day soon, we will face death and there will be new grace we have not needed before.  Jesus was the original partaker of dying grace but he is also the provider of dying grace. But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man (Heb 2:9).  We are given a real example of dying Grace in Acts when Stephen was stoned: And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep (Acts 7:59-60).  Other scripture gives us assurance that this grace will be sufficient.  That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life (Titus 3:7).  Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work (1 Thes 4:16-17).  

Dr. Tom Hayes penned the lyrics and wrote the music for New Grace though I am unsure of the date.
