But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:57).
The US has just come from a national election. About half of voters candidate won the presidency, and of course another half’s did not. Candidates in many state and local races saw victory, many did not. Yet regardless of politics I know one who has already won the biggest victory for me, and for you. That person is Jesus Christ. The song Victory in Jesus captures the very essence of our victory through Christ. I have heard this song offered in worship to God since my first memory. Some might say it is a Baptist anthem; to me it never grows old.
You may ask, “What victory has Christ given us.” We look no further to the cross and his redeeming death whereby his blood cleanses us from sin. For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus (Rom 3:23-25). Do you believe in Christ?
Not only has Christ given us victory over sin He has given us victory over the trials and temptations of life. While Christ doesn’t keep his beloved away from trials he is there to help you navigate and sustain yourself. There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it (1 Cor 10:13). These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world (John 16:33). Christ gives us peace in the midst of the storms of life, praise His name! Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid (John 14:27).
Yes Jesus gives victory in life but he also has already wrought victory over death for believers. Jesus said unto her (Martha), I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live (John 11:25).
The words and music to Victory in Jesus were penned by Eugene M. Bartlett in 1939 near the end of his career and life. Mr Bartlett has been noted as one of the few founders of southern gospel music though I personally have never considered to be southern gospel. Mr. Bartlett have renown song-writer Alfred Brumley his start.
