And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature (Mark 16:15).
Go Tell It On the Mountain is a Christmas classic yet the hymn actually reflects Christ’s great commission to believers. As the angels told the shepherds in Luke 2:8-10 that Christ is born, so Christ sends us into the world to tell every man and woman about His great love and grace. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world (Matt 28:19-20).
At this Christmas time and all through the year, remember Christ’s commission, go tell it on the mountain and everywhere.
Go Tell It on the Mountain is an African-American spiritual song dating back to at least 1865. The lyrics and music were compiled and published by John Wesley Work, Jr. in Folk Songs of the American Negro (Nashville, Tennessee: 1907).
